The Tooth Extraction Procedure
Depending on the complexity of the extraction, your surgeon will use local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to numb the area and increase patient comfort during and after the procedure, minimizing discomfort. During the procedure, the tooth is then gently loosened and removed in a smooth, efficient manner.
Immediately after the tooth is removed, gauze pads are placed in the patient's mouth for the patient to bite down on to apply pressure to the socket and support quick healing at the extraction site. Once the tooth has been removed, your surgeon may place dissolvable and/or traditional stitches that may need to be removed at a follow-up appointment. Your surgeon will also provide aftercare instructions, such as eating soft foods and applying ice to reduce swelling, to help you watch for signs of complications and support a comfortable recovery in the weeks following the procedure.
