Oral Surgery for Orthodontics

Oral surgery procedures are often an important part of orthodontic treatment, addressing a range of issues that can affect a patient’s dental health and alignment. These procedures may include the removal of impacted teeth, exposure of unerupted teeth, or even minor gum or bone adjustments to facilitate proper tooth movement. By collaborating closely with orthodontic specialists, our surgical team ensures each intervention is carefully timed and tailored to the patient’s unique needs, helping optimize the efficiency and outcomes of the orthodontic process.

At Signature Oral Surgery & Implants, we work together with orthodontists to provide a variety of orthodontic oral surgical treatments. Call our Lubbock, TX, or Hobbs, NM, location to learn more.

Extractions & Impacted Teeth

With years of advanced training, oral surgeons specialize in surgical extractions and provide advanced pain management, ensuring the efficacy and comfort of your procedure. Orthodontists typically recommend tooth extractions to address crowding, reshaping facial structure, and removing impacted or or damaged teeth.

Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery)

Orthognathic surgery can involve procedures such as an osteotomy (bone cutting), bone grafts, or distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone), and orthodontic (braces) care. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages, and the course of treatment can last from a few months to a year or more.

Tooth Exposure

If your child is beginning or actively undergoing orthodontic treatment, a tooth exposure procedure can clear a path for the teeth to erupt so patients can progress with orthodontic treatment. This procedure uses local anesthesia so your surgeon can gently move the gum tissue and, if needed, adjust any bone that’s stopping the tooth from coming in. We will work with your child’s orthodontist to coordinate this procedure with the orthodontic treatment plan.

Temporary Anchorage Device

A temporary anchorage device (TAD) is a device that is temporarily placed in the mouth to target teeth that may need specialized treatment without affecting the surrounding teeth. These tiny pins can be quickly and comfortably placed in the jawbone and provide a fixed anchor for a number of tooth movements such as space closure, molar rotation, and correction of open bites.

This advanced technology allows our surgeons to treat some complex cases by achieving results that might otherwise have required jaw surgery. Once the desired results have been achieved, the “pin” is easily removed.

Frenectomies

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed on both adults and children to release the frena, the connective muscle between tissues.

A labial frenectomy targets the tissue connecting the lip to the gums, often to aid orthodontic treatment or the fitting of dentures.

A lingual frenectomy addresses the connective tissue under the tongue, helping with nursing or correcting speech issues due to restricted movement from the frenum.
